Landscaping Renewal Project

May 28, 2008: The landscape renewal continues with the planting of native trees and other indigenous foliage. In addition to saving water using desert plants, a more efficient irrigation system is being implemented.
Why is Westcor updating the landscaping?
We are reinvesting the Paradise Valley Mall & Villages for a number of reasons. Here are a few of them:
- Create a color-filled and unified landscaping theme throughout each retail corner located along Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard. The focus is on bold and strong plantings of desert adaptive planting to replace the old and struggling plant material that was not able to tolerate the street and parking lot conditions they were planted in.
- Bring landscaping to city code, screen parking lots, minimize steep slopes (especially where pedestrians have access) and address potential hazards such as cracked or heaving walks that currently exist on the property.
- Increase the number of native plants and trees, which are more conducive to low water-use, while at the same time adding elements of color and texture. The overall result of this project will increase the amount of plant material threefold while decreasing the amount of fertilizers and water used to maintain the property.
- Incorporate pedestrian friendly shade which provides connectivity within and to the properties.
- Reduce water usage by upgrading to an irrigation system that has sensors to measure moisture levels and automatically adjusts the watering schedules to real-time conditions
Why were some of the pine trees removed?
Regarding the removal of mature pine trees, please know that we did not remove every tree. Our consultants assessed each tree individually as to their conformance to the aforementioned objectives and as to their individual health. (For example: our studies have indicated that several trees are infested by spider mites, compromising the integrity of the trees.) We were able to salvage over 100 of the pine trees that will be replanted as part of our project.
What types of plants and trees will be incorporated into the new landscape design?
Examples of native plant materials include: palo brea trees, date palms, lantana, red yucca and many more plant varieties. Renderings are available at theparadisevalleymall
What is going in on the northwest corner of Cactus and Tatum?
The fence that is up on the corner is a safety precaution as we reconfigure the retention basin to make the area more pedestrian friendly and eventually provide a venue for events and activities. We are also taking the same steps on the retention area on the southeast corner of Cactus and Paradise Village Parkway West.
